So here we go...... my first ever blog.
I meant to write an entry this summer after spending time on the Pine Ridge Reservation but never did- so I may do a little catch up. This summer I headed down to Pine Ridge to teach art lessons with two professional artists. Originally kids were going to be transported to the 555 Thrift store in Whiteclay, NE for the lessons but none showed up. So the owner of the store called around to see if there were any opportunities for us around Pine Ridge village (about a mile or so away). It ended up that there were about 70 kids at the park being watched by some volunteers from a church camp. The kids were very excited to do the art project that we had set up for them and the dusty dirty concrete basketball court was a great place for everyone to spread out and work on their projects. I ended up sitting with an adorable four year old girl. Her clothes were dirty and smelled of urine and when she smiled her teeth were all black and rotten, but I tell you that she was one of the cutest kids I have ever seen. Her personality was also sweet and quiet which made her nice to work with. I ended up helping her with her project for most of the afternoon and she displayed excellent artistic skill for her age! It was a great trip all around and I'm really glad I had the chance to help out.
